Don't go expecting a hotel because you'll be disappointed. However, if you go with the mindset that it is a viable alternative to camping you'll be pleasantly surprised. The accommodation is basic but comfortable. The toilet & shower rooms are dated but functional. But you don't come here for the accommodation, you come here for the surroundings. The cabins are... more

We stayed in the Ohia Wing which is part of Volcano House, across the street and not on the crater rim. The room was cold, and outdated. It smelled moldy and the carpet was filthy. Think public housing. I don't now what the rooms in the main bldg are like but from what I saw they are similar. Also, "the... more

Incredible attention to detail, excellent personable service, managers live on-site and are very friendly. Everything we wanted and more. Such a nice place to stay. Not a whole breakfast, but banana bread and fresh fruit was more than enough for us. Complimentary sodas, juice, water, chocolates, and more. Romantic, exotic, relaxing, luxurious, contemporary, private. We loved it. more

If you qualify to stay at KMC and are planning a visit to the Big Island I can highly recommend doing so. We stayed Oct 15 -18 in a one bedroom with jetted tub for around $130 a night. It was quiet, clean and the bed super comfortable. The fireplace was nice during the cooler evenings. You can either use... more

With the distances involved and the types of roads on big Island, we decided to spend 1 night on the Kileaua Volcano to give us plenty of sightseeing time. We opted for the Volcano House Hotel as this is the only one inside the National Park and the only one offering views into the volvano crater. On this, the hotel... more

I would not recommend a tour with Discover Hawaii Tour Group! April of 2008 a friend and I were in Honolulu and decided to take a tour of the Big Island that focused on Volcanoes National Park. The tour was put on by Discover Hawaii Tours/ Discover Hidden Hawaii Tours. The day before our tour, the one of the volcanoes... more

The Kilauea was flowing. Locating the flow was a little tricky because it was removed from the road, but one of the rangers pointed us to it. Once we found it, the shapes of the lava were striking. You will want to take A LOT of pictures. Plan to go in the afternoon because the lava looks great in the... more

We stayed at the Crater's Edge just after we were married in Maui. This B & B is incredible - we really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the Haiku room. The hosts are very welcoming and had thought of everyhing that we would need in our room. The fridge is fully stocked and they supply extras like fresh banana... more

We loved this trail. Start in the parking lot and go towards the lava tubes first. Cross the road and take that little tour, then get back on the trail and go down the steep side and back up the more moderate side. We had some inexperienced hikers with us and they made it okay for the overall 4+ miles.... more

The Volcano House is a very unique experience. This very rustic hotel is not for those who wish to be pampered with the latest amenities, entertainment and fine dining, but for those who are looking to be at the location of interest, that is Kilauea. To be immersed in all of her majesty and surrounded by her beauty. To feel... more

I love visiting the Volcano National Park and there’s no better place to stay (on the entire island) than KMC. This past trip was my third visit and it was once again fantastic. You get amazing access to the park by staying here. I clear most trails looong before the first tourist bus pulls up. Plus it’s a short drive... more

Since this is in a national park, with rates set by the federal park, please don't expect much. We really expected something nice, but it's more like a bunk house than a hotel. Two hard double beds, a shower only, no heat or A/C, no TV or phone and a noisy building is what we found, while expecting a nice... more

After camping in Maui and around Hawaii for many many nights. Staying in the cabins was great. It is hard to believe just how cold it gets in winter especially when raining but between a tent and these cabins i will take the cabins any time. Remember they are not near the centre so you will need a car. Safe... more

We spent one night at the Volcano House in a Crater View room. We had a view of Halemaumau Crater and it was a unique experience. Prior reviews had me worried about what to expect, but we realized that we would not be getting a 5-star hotel. What you are paying for is the close proximity to the crater. Staff... more

As this is a military camp, one can only book it if one is either military, or as a guest of a member of the military. Please look into it, it is so worth it! This camp is a historical monument, which means it has the real character of a family camp from the 1930's, sort of like the camp... more

We didn't do the Iki trail, but we peered down into the crater at those who did, and that alone was something to behold. We also went back to the museum after dark to view the crater's glow. A little spooky. And don't forget to walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, and to get a good view of the Steam... more

Since there's probably more to do in the park than you have time, you're probably better off skipping this one, or just spending five minutes on it. Like a previous reviewer, we were surprised to find another parking lot after only a few minutes. more

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to do something special by checking out a volcano because we had never seen one. Even after reading the reviews (which were mostly negative) we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. Well, let me tell you........ The whole experience was worse then the negative reviews. Everything would have been... more

This hotel is right on the property of the National Park. We booked a deluxe room overlooking the volcano. We couldn't see the volcano because of the trees. What a view. When we got to the room you could tell it hadn't been used for a while. There was a musty, closed room smell. The room was way overpriced, $250... more
