This was just an awesome, one of a kind activity! We were a family of 5 (sister, brothers, and girlfriends) ranging in age from 25 to 31. the rest of our boat was comprised of 14 folks (some of who had sailed before, some who were complete novices) and a skipper and 2 sailors. The rest of the folks ranged... more
My son (12) and I went last Feb. I don't like touristy things, but the opportunity to participate rather than watch appealed to me. I was pleasantly surprised. After a quick intro on America's Cup history, the group is divided into 2 teams and each team is assigned a boat. The coolest part here - the boats you will crew... more
While on a recent cruise this is the only excursion we had booked through the ship, the 12-Meter Challenge. You actually get to race one of the America's cup yacht boats. It was pretty hot that day and no wind. I mean NO wind. Not exactly what you want when you are trying to race a sailboat. Well, we met... more
The 12 Meter Reggata out of Phillipsburg is truly an exceptlional excursion! Having participated 2x I would highly recommend it. There is a highly trained crew guiding you along the race which if memory serves was about a 1/2 or so. Your "crew" are given tasks to do onboard and shown the workings of the boat. At first you are... more
In August 2004, my family took a cruise to St. Maarten. We booked the 12 Metre Challenge. Personally, I went in very skeptical about it, figuring that I was not going to enjoy myself. I was completely wrong with this idea that I had put in my head. This was such an exciting, and thrilling experience!! The crew members are... more
This isn't your average and typical sailboat trip, this is something 1000x better. These are actual former Americas Cup racing sail boats, they have 5 of them collectively worth $20 million dollars. Where else can you sail or race on a multimillion dollar boat? In the 12 Metre Challenge they take you for an approx. 1-2 hour race with the... more
I was on this excursion on October 18, 2004 and had a great time. I remember when the US lost the cup in '83 and ever sense I have wanted to try it. Well I got my wish. I was able to race on True North IV, a Canadian boat, and beat the Stars and Stripes that brought back the... more
We loved the 12 metre challenge! The captain and crew of the ship were informative and helpful, and in a very short time, taught our 13 landlubbers and 1 experienced sailor how to properly manage a 36 foot sailboat through a nautical racecourse. We were assigned as winchers, main grinders, primary grinders, and we even had a bartender! (probably a... more
