Perhaps I'm out of synch with other visitors to this site, but I (and my partner) found this museum over-rated and boring. The emphasis is most definitely on the archaeology, as opposed to the history, the ground level upwards consists of run-of-the-mill exhibition boards and domestic artefacts in glass cases. Fans of structural archaeology will probably love this place, but... more

This is such a unique place. A museum with the normal displays and artifacts but built on top of the 300+ year history of the city. You start at the bottom with a cemetery from the 1600s and work your way up to the first stone building, house, etc with excavations to the current day. It is built on top... more

The reason this museum is so good boils down to one thing: it sits on top of actual archaeology sites/digs/foundations that you can wander through and read interpertations. For any of you who are like me (I've seen so many broken pottery display cases, my eyes glaze over the instant I see them), this museum is a revelation that there... more

I went into this museum with low expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. The video at the beginning was wonderfully made and narrates the early history of Montreal. The visual effects were so stunning that at some moments, it was difficult to differ between illusion and solid reality. It was overall enthralling and the 20 minutes just fly by. One... more

As their brochure notes, this is built on the site "where Montreal was born...." Pointe-a-Calliere is on the site of an insurance building (vestiges visible), which in itself sat upon previous structures. The point (no pun intended) is that Montreal is a city of layers: from the natives who once hunted on the site, to the French explorers who chased... more

This museum explores the beinning history of the City of Montreal for the visitor, by allowing you to view partially excavated city buildings and streets right under and around you as you walk through!! There are elevated metal walkways above some areas, just a couple feet. There are so many exhibits to see, so you will want to reserve about... more

"Strictly bush league museum"? Uh, okay. Whatever! This museum unearths the original city, folks. What more do you want? Not eveything needs to be accompanied by a ticker-tape parade. This museum may be small, but its approach is unique and exclusive, just like my beautiful city, ma belle province! Still, one can spend hours here. Well worth the visit. more

I recommend this museum highly--it provides a good overview of the history of the city, and the introductory video show is well done. (3-D animation projected on two screens.) My 11-year-old son enjoyed it as much as I did. We ate at the onsite cafe, L'Arrivage, finding that it was a better value and had friendlier service than Le Bourlinguer,... more

This a beautifull place, some people you simply can not satisfy even if it were plated in solid gold. They do not appreciate the hardships our ancestors went through. thank you for letting me have my word. Real Lariviere. and please continue the good work!!! more
