In Paris there are many clubs with all kinds of music and for all kinds of people. Most of them though do have very strict dress codes and are quite particular about their customers’ look.

Lots of trendy bars in Paris become clubs after the dark. The most famous ones are located in the Champs-Elysées area: the Six-Seven (former Bash), the VIP room (located in the basement of Planète Hollywood), the Baron, the Latina café... These celebrities meeting-points usually don’t have admission fees and are for people in their thirties or more.

In the Bastille area, the huge and chic Barrio Latino is also a great spot for having drinks and tapas while dancing the salsa. If they don’t charge entrances, they do have well-built bouncers who are not tender with those who mess around.

There are places to go out in almost every neighborhood, except maybe the deep south-western part of Paris (16th and 17th arrondissments) which is not the most lively. Here is an insight of the nicest areas to go out:

The Marais

Let’s start with the Marais. The gay area is full of funky bars, even if only a few of them are actually gay bars (Open Café, Bliss Kfé, L’Oiseau bariolé, le Cox…). If you are in your thirties, you will love the nice design and cool music of bars in the area of the Rue Vieille du Temple (L’Etoile manquante, Les Etages, Le Trésor, The Lizard Lounge…). Most of these bars also have a restaurant and sometimes two different atmospheres that can also suit those looking for a more quiet evening. You will also find wine bars in this area (La belle Hortense, les Enfants rouges), lots of terraces (Le Bazooka Café, Le bar Palmier…) and a few pubs (Mulligan’s, The Pure Malt, The Auld Alliance Co). And let’s not forget the Costes hotel bar, toward the Louvre, famous for its electro-lounge music, very trendy and quite expensive, it will suit those in their late thirties more than college students.

The Latin quarter

The Latin quarter has tones of bars of any kind (Tex mex, pubs, lounge…) and is perfect either for college students or older people with more sophisticated tastes. Pubs like the Pub Saint Germain with its special fancy cocktails or the The Frog and the Princess are good spots for students, as well as bars that are famous for their DJ’s or live music (Le Piano vache, Le Who’s bar). More classy places are L’Alcazar (very hype restaurant and bar design by Conran), and the very select private club, Castel. These are only a few of the dozens of bars in the neighborhood.

Bastille / Ménilmontant

Here you will find tones of that attracts a young and fairly local crowd. Most of them are quite tiny and crowded above all in the Rue de Lappe. These are perfect for pub-crawling but can become a bit tiring if you plan on staying in the same bar all night. Around the rue de Lappe, you’ll find better places to have a drink in peace with nice lounge atmospheres, hype music and most of the time food (La Fabrique, Le SanZ SanS, Le Wax…). If you go a little further from the Place de la Bastille, toward Charonne, you will find very nice and less crowded bars (La Plage, Boca chica, Le Pause café…). Continue toward Ménilmontant and you will find the very lively and trendy area of Rue Oberkampf, with its lovely bars like Le Café Charbon and hip live-music places (Le Cithéa).

Champs-Elysées

The very chic Buddha bar is a must for a zen evening. It has a beautiful décor and high ceilings and is perfect either for a drink or to have dinner.  Dark, moody and romantic...The best mojitos....A must see.

Also, the Queen Club is the most popular disco in Paris, with a great 70's party, complete with a stage show in multi-colored Afro wigs and 70's gear.

Clubs

On another hand, there are a bunch a real clubs, with entrance fees, all over Paris. For 18 to 30 years-old, the number one choice is the Locomotive at Pigalle: Quite affordable (10 to 20 €), House / Disco music and three floors to shake-out. The friendly Balajo, at Bastille (rue de Lappe) is also a good spot for all categories of age. The entrance fee is fairly cheap (around 15 €) and they have salsa classes and traditional French “bal-musette” in the afternoon. Another good choice for college students would be the Gibus near République, with mainly electro music (entrance fee 5 to 13 €). And let’s not forget the Batofar, a former lightship moored on the Seine just off the “Grande bibliothèque” (near Bercy): an unusual and convivial place very popular among college students (entrance fee: 7 to 12 €).

The hippest discothèques in Paris, more appropriate for those in their thirties or more, are Les Bains-Douches in the Marais: mythic Parisian club which attracts lots of celebrities and also has a restaurant (entrance fee: 20 €). The Queen on the Champs-Elysées, which used to be a gay dance club but is now mainstream, and has become one of the top venues for Paris clubbers (entrance fee: 15 to 20 €). And finally the Pulp, in the Grands boulevards area, a lesbian club, which has also become one of the latest fashionable club for many heterosexuals in their thirties, mostly on special Thursday nights (Entrance fee: 9 €).

In France, you have to be over 18 to get in clubs, but you will rarely be asked for an ID. The legal drinking age is 16.
